How It All Began

How It All Began

The story of Candlestone and Water Tower Grille began in 1972, when a group of local businessmen transformed a former apple orchard into a beautiful restaurant and hotel. Featuring a glass-walled dining room overlooking the orchard, a cascading water fountain, and a unique sunken bar, Candlestone quickly became known for its impressive views, exceptional food, and outstanding service — but this was only the beginning of the dream.

A few years later, Candlestone’s golf course opened, masterfully designed by Bruce Matthews, who considered it one of his finest works. Tucked behind the orchard, the landscape of majestic pines and rolling hills revealed itself as the perfect setting for lush fairways and challenging greens. Over time, Candlestone earned a reputation as one of West Michigan’s most beautiful and toughest golf courses.

In 2008, new owners Catherine Farr and Steven Leach embraced the legacy of Candlestone with a vision for modernization. They completely remodeled and renamed the restaurant to The Water Tower Grille, refreshed the hotel rooms, and enhanced the golf course while staying true to Bruce Matthews’ original design. Their efforts built upon the solid foundation laid decades earlier, ensuring Candlestone remained a beloved destination.
